Germs don’t stand a chance

In time for the holiday season, Osram has launched a new water purification system which can completely purify drinking water in just 10 to 15 minutes. At the heart of this system is a UVC lamp that is inserted in the water container. The unit emits ultraviolet radiation at a wavelength that kills bacteria and viruses. Campers and caravanners can now enjoy clean safe germ-free drinking water wherever they are without using any chemicals.

Anyone who has ever had to buy drinking water in supermarkets on their travels will know how expensive that is and what a nuisance it is to carry. And then there’s the question of taste. Up to now, products such as silver ions and chlorine have normally been used to kill germs. Now there is a system that has none of the familiar disadvantages of after-taste or the risk of incorrect dosage.

This is how it works: You simply take a normal canister or tank, hang the UVC lamp inside and switch on. Depending on the size of the canister or tank it should be left on for 10 to 15 minutes once each day. And if you want to make life even easier, you can connect it to a timer. UVC radiation will reliably kill germs according to DIN Standard 5031-10:2000-03. This has been confirmed by an independent German laboratory in Herford.

Puritec is a system that is easy to use and needs no specialist installation. A safety cutout switch turns the lamp off as soon as the unit is opened. There is no longer any need to empty tanks first into special containers and then return it to the tank after the tank has been cleaned. Power is supplied via a cable suitable for use with drinking water and 230V control gear. A 12 V version is also available.

Background information
The demand for water purification is huge. Numerous diseases such as hepatitis A and E, cholera, typhus and dysentery can be transmitted through unclean water. The most common illness suffered by travellers as a result of drinking contaminated water or food is diarrhoea. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), up to 80 percent of all international travellers are affected (WHO: "International Travel and Health 2005"). Even though diarrhoea may last only a couple of days, it can spoil the whole holiday. Often, sufferers have to break off their journey and return home for treatment. The cause of these illnesses and diseases are micro-organisms such as bacteria, viruses, parasites and fungi that enter the body through contaminated water, food and drink. Domestic campers are also at risk because water that is bacteria-free when drawn off or purchased can develop bacteria during storage. This problem also has to be addressed.
